Finding Journals

Check the main catalogue.

Example recordYou can search by title or subject and you can also LIMIT your search to eJournals (see the help information on the search pages).

The location information link for journals tells you where to find the bound run of the title in the library.

Check the 'Latest Received' information link to find which parts of the journal have been bound or stored, and which are on the numbered display bays in the 4th floor Periodicals Reading Room.

All journals are for reference only and cannot be borrowed. Some older journals (those first published before 1980), may still be on the card catalogue.

Periodicals enquiries are handled at the desk in the 4th Floor Periodicals Reading Room or at the Information Desk in the Information Centre.
Remember when transcribing locations and classmarks, that they are case-sensitive.

The most common locations are listed below:

These titles are fetched from the Stack Service Desk on the 4th floor.

History Periodicals (63) Upper Library, North Block
Law Periodicals Upper Library, North Block
Philosophy Periodicals (66) Upper Library, North Block
Psychology Periodicals (67) 6th Floor

Journals for these subject areas are shelved alphabetically close to the books.

Here are a few useful tips on the arrangement of periodicals on the shelf:

  • The addition of a lower case letter to location codes in indicates a particular country
e.g. ABc refers to English language and literature journals, and ABg refers to German language and literature journals. These journals are shelved in separate sequences after the main AB (language and literature) journals.
  • The addition of numbers to location codes in the Periodicals collections indicates subdivisions within the main subject
e.g. I13 (sociology) is shelved after I (politics and economics) but before I13.1 (anthropology).
  • If a journal has no collection prefix then it is usually in the Periodicals Stack Service PR collection.
