Term and vacation dates

Spring Term 2012: 9 Jan 2012 - 4 April 2012

Easter 2012: The Library will operate Saturday hours 5 and 10 April 2012. The Library will be closed 6 to 9 April 2012.

Summer Term 2012: 11 April 2012 - 8 June 2012. The Library will be closed 4 and 5 June 2012.

Summer Vacation 2012: 9 Jun 2012 - 23 Sept 2012. The Library will be closed 27 August 2012

Please note: the Library is closed every Sunday.

If you are travelling to join the Library, please take a moment to visit our membership page and how to find us. Please note that some of our services, such as Special Collections, have different opening hours to the main Library. For more information please click here.

Due to the nature of the building the following daily close down procedure operates throughout the year:

  • Last entry to the Library is 15 minutes before the advertised closing time
  • The last Stack fetch is one and a half hours prior to closure (two hours during vacation time)
  • A warning bell is rung 20, 15 and 10 minutes before the Library closes
  • Special Collections and floors 5, 6 and 7 are cleared 15 minutes prior to closure
  • Photocopying facilities close 15 minutes prior to closure
  • The Membership, Returns and Circulation desks close 15 minutes prior to closure
  • The 4th floor reading rooms close 10 minutes prior to closure

The Library is located on the 4th floor of Senate House with access from Russell Square or Malet Street. We are easily reached by public transport.

The four nearest tube lines that stop within a few minutes walking distance of Senate House are: Russell Square (Piccadilly Line), Goodge Street (Northern Line), Tottenham Court Road (Northern and Central Lines), and Euston Square (Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City and Circle Lines). Individuals can use the Library for reference purposes by purchasing a day membership. There is also the option to purchase a 7 day carnet, which allows the user to make 7 visits over the following 12 months.

Students studying with the University of London International Programme are entitled to one free visit to view the collections held in Senate House Library. Students wishing to join the library, may do so at the following rates (inclusive of VAT).

Your university ID card is usually sufficient. However, if this does not specifically indicate that you are academic staff or a research student, a letter from your academic department to this effect will suffice.

Taught postgraduate students from Imperial College wishing to access Senate House Library are required to complete and submit an application form PRIOR to visiting Senate House Library.

All applications must be validated by a member of Imperial Library staff.

We offer Institutional and Corporate membership tailor-made to your organisation’s needs.

Our most common package, Corporate Membership, consists of four borrowing cards (each with a borrowing allowance of 8 books) for £701.36 (inclusive of VAT). Only one package is permitted per organisation. Additionally, we can provide Institutional membership for organisations with greater numbers. We also offer a popular membership package for Study Abroad Programmes.

Archive and manuscript users

A free day ticket is available for researchers only using archives and manuscripts. This ticket is not valid for access to the rest of the Library nor any of the other collections or digital resources. It is available for people who are not able to use the library under any other existing access arrangement.

Access must be arranged at least one working day in advance with Special Collections. Appointments need to be made before 4pm on working days. Messages left after this time will be dealt with the following working day. Proof of address and photo ID must be shown on arrival at the Library.

Please apply in person to the Membership Desk, 4th floor, if you wish to join. Remember to bring the required documentation with you. Please click here for information about ID requirements.

Membership ID requirements

Membership: Proof of Address and Identification Requirements

To register at Senate House Library, most University of London students and staff only require their college ID card or staff card.

All others will require both proof of current address and photo identification.

Acceptable forms of proof of current address include the following. Each must have your name and address:

  • Utility bill (gas, electricity, telephone or water)
  • Bank / building society statement (original documents - no online print outs or branch print-offs)
  • Credit card statement
  • Council tax bill / council rent book
  • State pension book
  • Family credit / benefit book
  • Passports
  • National identity card with address
  • Driving licence with address
  • Home insurance policy
  • Pay slips

Acceptable forms of identification:
