Documents Direct

Copies of extracts of published copyright works, such as book chapters and journal articles, for non-commercial research or private study. The amount that can be copied from any one item through Documents Direct is limited to:

  • One article from an issue of a journal
  • One chapter from a book*
  • One paper from a volume of conference proceedings*
  • One report from a volume of law reports*
  • One short story or poem (of not more than 10 pages) from an anthology*

*Or 5% of the volume, if this is greater

Out of copyright material and artistic works, and unpublished works such as manuscripts and archive material can be ordered through our SHL Reproductions service.

VAT (at 20%) is added to all orders originating from within the EU.

Placing an order

To place an order, complete a Documents Direct order form. The order form includes a copyright declaration that must be signed by hand. Completed order forms can be returned by post or fax. Alternatively the signed form can be scanned and returned by email

Once we receive your order we will check the copyright status of the work and whether it is suitable for copying. If we are unable to supply a copy or if we require further information we will contact you. Otherwise we will confirm your order by sending you a Payment Summary detailing the total amount to pay, usually within 1-3 working days.

Payment

Once you receive your Payment Summary you can pay over the phone with a credit or debit card. Alternatively you can return the Payment Form here by post or fax; for security reasons we do not recommend you return it via email. We accept all major credit and debit cards apart from American Express. You can also send a cheque made payable to ‘University of London’. Cheques must be in UK currency and drawn on a UK bank account.

Delivery

Once we receive payment we will begin copying for your order. Documents Direct orders are normally completed within 1-2 days following payment. Your copy will be sent by first class post within the UK, or by Airmail overseas.
