Monday to Friday 10.00 - 17.00

Closed to non-Fellows most Thursday afternoons, for about six weeks in the summer, and some other days.

ACCESS

Open to any staff and students registered at the School of Advanced Study who bring proof of status.  Other students carrying out research should bring a letter of introduction from their supervisor.  Members of the public admitted by prior arrangement.

Extensive subject card catalogue available to pre-1988 accessions and periodical articles.

Manuscripts are described in A Catalogue of the manuscripts of the Society of Antiquaries of London, by Pamela Willetts (Boydell, 2000), and on the National Archives A2A web site (http://www.a2a.org.uk).  Internal indexes to prints, drawings, paintings and museum objects.

Approx. 150,000 volumes, with 80,000 printed titles including about 700 current periodicals; 40,000 prints and drawings; 1000 manuscript accessions.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS OR STRENGTHS

Archaeology (especially British and Western European), architectural history and the decorative arts (especially medieval), heraldry and older works on British local history and genealogy.   A comprehensive collection of British county historical and archaeological journals and record society publications is held, as well as archaeological journals from most European countries.  There are special collections of broadsides, proclamations and Civil War tracts.

ADDITIONAL FACILITIES

Photocopying facilities, photography by arrangement.  Microfilm and fiche reader.  Internet access.  Personal computers can be used in designated areas.
