Saturdays by appointment only between 1000 - 1300 & 1400 - 1645.

Closed bank holidays, Mondays, Sundays, and the third week in February. Extended opening hours in July and August. Contact the Library for details.

E-Library - Museum Hours


ACCESS

Open to all members of the public, students under the age of 18 by appointment only.  Proof of identity required for Reader’s Ticket, available from the E-Library.  Wheelchair accessible.

E-Library is open to all Museum visitors free of charge.

Library 100,000 volumes, 8000 rare books, 20,000 bound periodicals, 2000 microforms and CD-ROMs.  Over four miles of manuscripts: - Public Records (Royal and Merchant Navy); Business Records; Personal papers; artificial collections.  50,000 charts.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS OR STRENGTHS

Rare Book Collection dating from 1474-1850, including atlases, voyages, astronomy, scientific instruments, shipbuilding, piracy, shipwrecks, navigation. 

Crew Lists and agreements, Lieutenant’s logs, Lloyd’s Register of Shipping Survey Reports, Master’s Certificates.

ADDITIONAL FACILITIES

E-Library @ the Caird Library is a free resource for all visitors.  Public access computers allow visitors to search the online collections and the virtual maritime world.  The area has been designed with family learning in mind and offers young people’s books and a supportive environment for life long learners. 

A reprographics room provides access to microfilm and fiche readers, TV/video/DVD in order to view film footage.
