A substantial research-level collection with broad coverage of the history, institutions and culture of the United States.

The book collection has particular strengths in:

  • Art History

  • Literature
  • An extensive reference section

Other subjects covered include Education, Film, Politics, Native and African American Studies Economics, Sociology and Religion.

The collection includes a number of United States Studies periodicals, notably those of state and regional historical societies.

The US collection supports the research and teaching of the Institute for the Study of the Americas and also contains material acquired for the Institute’s US studies programme.

Collection location

  • Most books are located on the 6th floor, South Block
  • All items available on open access will display the location U.S. STUDIES 6th floor (33)  eg U.S. Studies 6th floor (33) KCGN Tho
  • Periodicals: Recent issues are located in the North Reading Room (Periodicals Room), 4th floor. Back issues are held in the closed access stacks, display the location Stack Service, can be requested via the online catalogue and collected at the Circulation Desk, 4th floor.
  • Large books are shelved in a separate sequence - indicated by the prefix ‘f’ or ‘folio’, before the location code
  • The Reference collection is at the beginning of the sequence - this includes bibliographies, biographical reference works, dictionaries and encyclopedias
  • Some items are held in the closed access stacks. These will display the location Stack Service. They can usually be requested via the online catalogue and collected at the Circulation Desk, 4th floor. Ask staff there if you require assistance.
  • Please use the online catalogue to locate individual titles
