George Collection of Piano Music
The Collection forms the major part of the bequest of Dr W.H. George, which came to the Library in 1973. It contains piano and keyboard music published from the 1830's to the 1950's, both music originally written for piano (piano solo, one piano four hands, two pianos four hands), and arrangements for piano of orchestral, chamber and choral works, and of operas and songs. Some works are represented by two or even three different arrangements. French and Spanish composers are particularly well represented, but the collection also contains works by British, Russian, and Scandinavian composers, as well as the major German and Austrian composers of the baroque, classical and romantic periods. Many comparatively minor or little-known composers are represented, some by just one or two works, some by a larger number. The Collection also includes piano tutors and books of technical studies and exercises. The works in the collection are recorded in the main catalogue.
